Big Mama & Curly
I’ve been really curious, but too busy to ask—
Who is Big Mama? And who is Curly?
Dan Evans wrote the quartet for 4 Tubas and
I thought it would transcribe for trumpets.
And low and behold, the trumpet version
was put on the new WSMA Trumpet 4 list
Since mid-December there are at least
22 trumpet quartets working on the tune.
Great!!
Now, are you curious about Big Mama and Curly?
It seems that Dan’s grandparents
owned an automotive garage from the late
‘60’s to the late 80’s in the little village of Cecil, WI.
Dan’s grandfather was called ‘Curly’ on the citizen band radio when
he was called to go out in the wrecker.
Dan’s grandmother was known as ‘Big Mama’ although she was
only 4 feet tall and weighed in at 80 pounds!
They were really a couple of characters,
Curly being known as an ornery guy with a major temper
and grandma had a tendency to say whatever came to her mind.
So the two contrasting sections fit. ‘
Curly’ is the nasty funk portion of the piece and
the cool lady ‘Big Mama’ is the swing portion of the tune.
The contrasting sections reflect the moods of his grandparents.
